One needs to check a few installation requirements for this type of system. The most important is that the rope and chain locker must have sufficient space, especially depth. If your locker is small or particularly shallow the anchor rode will have nowhere to go and the windlass will be subject to frequent jamming. This also depends on how much line you plan to keep in the locker. The minimum distance from the top of the pile of anchor line to the top of the locker must be 15 inches.

The vertical alignment of the windlass is important. The anchor rode must approach the windlass at very close to a 90° angle to the main shaft of the windlass. (see fig. 2). The height of the bow roller used must be very close to the height of the center of the wildcat.
Also, please consider the following when choosing a rope-to-chain system. All rope-to-chain windlasses require that the anchor line be directly spliced to the chain, eliminating the shackle and thimble. This splice has the potential of becoming a weak link in the system. Studies have been done that show the splice is very strong when it is new. Over time this splice can weaken. Some authorities suggest having the line re-spliced every two years, other suggest every 50 usages. The point is that this rope-to-chain splice cannot be put on the boat and forgotten for years at a time. It needs periodic inspection and replacement.
