| Ideal offers many ways to customize both new and existing windlasses and installations. Often the position of hawse holes, bow rollers, chain lockers and limited space make using a standard size windlass almost impossible. Ideal can most often tailor something to fit. Because we fabricate our own gear boxes there is considerable flexibility. On the horizontal type windlass special width gear cases are a relatively easy change. Many have been made a little wider or narrower to match existing hawse pipe and roller dimensions. Another customization to the horizontal type is the different combination of wildcats and capstans. Virtually any combination is available; the most elaborate being dual chain wildcats with dual rope capstans outboard and a vertical capstan and wildcat on top. Vertical windlasses can be built with special deck thickness measurements to work around deck beam and other obstructions. Custom stainless steel deck plate are used to work around limited space on deck. Older windlasses can be upgraded with more modern materials. All of Ideal's older horizontals with steel gear cases can be refitted with new stainless steel cases. Those wishing to replace an existing windlass, either an Ideal or a competitor's can do so, many times reusing the existing footprint and bolt hole pattern.
