There are many upgrades available to older windlasses. Above left is an old MODEL BCW3. It's a powerful design, but was built with several steel and cast iron components. At right is the upgraded BWC3. The steel deck plate, chain stripper and brake band have been replaced with polished 316L stainless steel. The cast iron wildcat was replaced by one made of chrome plated bronze. A variable speed hand held control is also offered.

Horizontal models can be upgraded by replacing steel cases with 316L stainless steel cases. These cases can enclose an exposed motor and cut down on maintenance since they do not need to be painted. The cases are offered with a powder coated or highly polished finish. Some smaller windlasses can be retrofitted with rope/chain wildcats so that they become fully automatic. Faster gearing is available on some models.
