Since its beginnings Ideal Windlass has built anchoring systems for large craft starting with windlasses and cable retrievers for the Navy. When the company switched its focus to pleasure craft Ideal continued to produce windlasses for large yachts. Through the years improvements in design both inside and out have been made so that today Ideal's large windlasses are both rugged and attractive. Let’s take a moment to review some of the features that
make Ideal stand above the competition. Our horizontal windlasses are
constructed with stainless steel
rather than aluminum housings. Offered either with a powder coated or polished
finish, they are both rugged and attractive. Inside these, as well as our
vertical models, the gearing is both powerful and oversized. For all gypsies,
wildcats, capstans, release wheels, friction plates and brake parts solid bronze
castings are used. They weigh more than aluminum, however their life expectancy
is far greater and they can be disassembled 15, 20 or even 25 years later. Our
units may weigh a bit more, but they last. A wide selection of power options are available: hydraulic, and variable or single speed, three phase or single phase electric. The very popular variable speed is supplied with a deck plug-in remote that allows the operator maximum flexibility while anchoring. Below are charts which are meant as a guide to selecting the proper size windlass for your yacht. Please feel free to contact the factory to discuss your windlass system.
The following pages include photos and line drawings with measurement charts of the Size 6-11 windlasses.
